It's imperative that my sons can all change their oil or put on a spare tire. The basics! Yesterday we hit a snag, the oil filter cap was impacted and would not come off! @%$*! We'll have to try again today and perhaps even surrender to taking it to a professional. After the emotions aroused by this obstacle subsided, it occurred to me how necessary it is to deal with physical world problems while writing fiction. Writing is creative, but also an escape. Physical obstacles, such as a stuck oil filter cap, remind me that the writing process is no different. The obstacles that arise in crafting a story challenge the escapist tendency of the writer's imagination, but the demands of a true story will force you to return to work in service of the story, not in service of escapism.
